THE NATIONAL FOLK ORCHESTRA OF IRELAND
The Comhaltas National Folk Orchestra of Ireland was first formed by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in the late 1980’s and has always attracted the most gifted young Irish musicians and singers. The line-up is drawn from 24 different counties and the UK. TradFest has commissioned Danu’s Tom Doorley to compose a new work by the NFOI “Machnamh – Airs and Songs of Kilmainham” to be performed in the historic Kilmainham Gaol. Tom has been musical director and composer with the NFOI since 2017. In 2013 the Orchestra performed “The Boroimhe Suite” to celebrate the millennium of the Battle of Clontarf. In 2016 the Orchestra presented “MACALLA 1916” which was again specially commissioned by Comhaltas to commemorate the Easter Rising. It was performed in the Barbican Theatre in London and on Easter Saturday night, for the1916 Relatives Concert in the RDS. Tom Doorley was commissioned in 2017 to arrange and compose “LEGACY” which had its debut at the Fleadh in Ennis in 2017 performed again at Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Drogheda in 2018. In 2019 “ORIEL WAVE” written by Tom Doorley, had its World premiere at Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann, Drogheda in August 2019. “Machnamh – Songs and Airs of Kilmainham” is a fitting and unique tribute to some of the seminal moments of the Gaol’s history.
