MAIRÉAD NÍ MHAONAIGH
Born and raised in the ruggedly beautiful heartland of the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht in North West Donegal, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is a native Gaelic speaker who grew up surrounded by the music of her family and neighbours. In 1987, she and her husband Frankie Kennedy decided to become full-time musicians and Altan was born. The band have beguiled and enchanted audiences ever since, playing the music of their native Donegal around the world, from New York to Tokyo and beyond. Mairéad is internationally known as one of the most important fiddle players that play in the unique Donegal style and has collected innumerable accolades throughout her career while recording with such luminaries as Enya, The Chieftains, Alison Krauss and Bonnie Raitt. In May of 2018 she will be the recipient of a lifetime achievement award in recognition of her work in promoting the song and fiddle music of Donegal at the annual ‘Cup of Tae’ Festival in Ardara, Co, Donegal. We are delighted to add her to our line-up.
Mairéad will be joined for this special performance by renowned harpist Cormac De Barra.
